What Does It Mean When Your Car Overheats?

Reasons a car would overheat range from a leak in the cooling system to an issue with the radiator. Vehicles differ in temperature. But for the most part, a car tends to operate between 195 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep an eye on your car’s temperature gauge to see if it is reading higher than normal. If it is, do not drive your vehicle

Never drive a car that is overheating. Not only can it put you in danger, but it can also cause bigger and more costly issues in the future. Take a look at what causes a car to overheat to learn more.

What Causes a Car to Overheat?

When a car overheats, it is a sign that there is another issue at hand that needs to be identified and handled before you drive your car. Here are some of the reasons why a car overheats:

  • There’s a leak in the cooling system: Most likely there is a leak within the cooling system. The cooling system contains the radiator, hoses, water pump, head gasket, and thermostat. Any of the above-mentioned could be the cause.
  • There’s a problem with your coolant: When you add improper coolant to your car or your coolant-to-water ratio is off-kilter (50/50 is correct), your engine can overheat.
  • There’s a blockage in the coolant hose: Dirt and debris may be stuck inside your coolant hose. If so, it can cause issues within your cooling system.
  • There’s an issue with the radiator: The radiator is a common culprit for causing a vehicle to overheat. Collins drivers will want to check to see if there is a blockage, leak, or an issue with the radiator fan.
  • Your car’s water pump is broken: There may be a leak in the water pump, which sends engine coolant to your car’s cooling system.

What to Do When a Car Overheats

There can be times when Hammond drivers do not know there is something wrong with the vehicle until it starts to overheat while behind the wheel. Understandably, that can be scary, so use caution if it happens to you. If your car overheats while driving McComb roads, turn off your air conditioning and run your heat on full blast.

Of course, it may feel uncomfortable, but it will aid in pulling the heat away from the engine.

Find a safe place to pull over, do not do what they do in the movies, and pop the hood. Instead, wait at least 30 minutes before popping the hood of the hot car. Call a towing service to pick up your vehicle and have them bring your car to our service center!
