How to Get Better Gas Mileage When Driving

2022 Honda Accord Hybrid

If you’re like most McComb drivers on the road, you’re looking for the advantage when it comes to fuel economy. You’ve probably searched far and wide for tips on how to get better gas mileage or have been given advice that may or may not have worked. If you’re really looking to improve your fuel economy, the best way to get the job done is by adopting these fuel-efficient driving habits next time you’re on nearby Hammond highways.

Tips for Being a Fuel-Efficient Driver

Regardless of whether the road takes you to Prentiss for your daily commute or your favorite vacation spot for a weekend of much-needed downtime, the next time you’re behind the wheel, use these tips to improve your fuel economy:

  1. Avoid Lead Foot: Take at least 5 seconds to bring your car from 0 to 5 mph. Avoid any sudden, heavy impression on the gas pedal. Suddenly mashing the gas sends additional fuel you don’t need and can kill your fuel economy quickly.
  2. Consider Traffic: If you plan ahead most days, you can avoid rush-hour and stop-and-go traffic. Some people leave work a little early or later to avoid these traffic hangups. The constant stop-and-go is one of the easiest ways to burn additional gas – and it’s also hard on your vehicle.
  3. Avoid Extremely High Speeds: When your car travels above 65 MPH, it begins to burn fuel much faster. Some vehicles switch into overdrive, and this will quickly drain your fuel tank. Ideally, you want to travel between 55 and 65 MPH.
  4. Coast to a Stop: Instead of applying your brakes repeatedly, pay attention to the road ahead of you. If there’s nothing blocking your path, take your foot off the accelerator and allow your car to coast to a stop. If you want to save fuel on hills, lower your speed as you continue uphill, and use your car’s momentum to coast down the hill.
  5. Use Your AC On the Highway: Your car does use gas when you use your AC. When you’re traveling around town, roll your windows down. At lower speeds you’re not putting drag on the car. However, on interestates and highways, roll your windows up and use the AC. At high speeds, the wind resistance pulls your car down and reduces your fuel economy.
